Welcome to Newcastle – starting as a Roman Fort and growing to become one of the major cities of the industrial revolution; Newcastle has a fantastic story to tell. We will provide this through a guided walk of Newcastle showing you the key sites of the city over three hours with a break in the middle. Following this we will take you to the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas for lunch and then Newcastle’s Castle; both part of the historic core of the city. Newcastle’s Castle dates from 1080, built by one of the sons of William the Conqueror, the castle has defended against Scottish attacks including a failed assault by William Wallace! St. Nicholas Cathedral church is first mentioned in 1092 and developed as the primary parish in Newcastle. This tour will take you around the core of Newcastle and includes entrances to the castle and Cathedral and areas where the industrial revolution occurred which have shaped much of Newcastle.
This tour is a whole day tour. During the tour we will enter Newcastle Castle which due to its historic mature is not fully accessible to customers with disabilities – please contact us for further details. All weather clothing will be required and walking shoes. There will be a lunch break at Dog Leap Cafe inside St. Nicholas Cathedral during the tour. The terrain of Newcastle can be steep and uneven this tour may be unsuitable for those who are recovering from injuries or do not feel comfortable on longer distance walks. Things To Bring
For the tour, Iles Tours always suggest that you dress warmly with waterproofs as the weather is always changeable. Please do bring a camera to capture moments on the tour.
Locations that will be seen and a part of the Historical tour are: The Quayside, The Swing and Tyne Bridge, The Castle Keep, St. Nicholas Cathedral, Blackfriars, The Town Walls, The Assembly Rooms, The Stephenson Monument and The Earl Grey’s Monument.
