From January-April 2024, Alex Iles of Iles Tours delivered a 10-week training programme for living history tour guides at Jarrow Hall, an Anglo-Saxon museum, farm and village in South Tyneside.
Throughout the programme, the service offered was simply outstanding and Alex was a pleasure to work with. Alex went above and beyond to prepare each session and teach the tour guides about Anglo-Saxon history and culture; both his passion for teaching people the history of the North East of England, and his friendly, approachable personality shone through across the training period. We cannot recommend Iles Tours enough!

Alex Iles of lles Tours delivered guide training for several of my instructors, me included, in 2021. The training was exceptional in its scope and was delivered in a very dynamic and exciting way. We spent the early part of the day outdoors, listening to Alex’s own style via one of his itineraries at Newcastle Quayside. His attention to detail and the breadth and depth of content was excellent. He engaged the team and we all left energised and with a much-enhanced knowledge of the city.
For the second part of the training, we went to the classroom where Alex helped us find our own style and voice by speaking about something we are passionate about. He provided excellent feedback on our delivery styles. He then spent some time helping us develop our tour scripts, suggesting books, websites and other online resources where reliable information can be found. He stressed that tour content needs to be fun and engaging, but also historically accurate. At the end of the session, he invited us all to stay in touch and offered to look over anything we develop. His organisation and communication both prior to and after the session were always professional and courteous. I have no hesitations in recommending him as a trainer.
