Bamburgh and Lindisfarne
The imposing fortress of Bamburgh has been occupied by humans for at least three thousand years. What makes the castle famous is its history as a fortress during the Dark Ages and a medieval castle belonging to the Kings of England. The Castle has seen a renaissance with its inclusion in the series Last Kingdom. Nearby, Holy Island is the monastery where the Viking age began.
Berwick-upon-Tweed and Norham
Sitting on the English-Scottish border Berwick-upon-Tweed has the unfortunate history of being the bloodiest town in England, having been captured or traded fourteen times. Norham is the historic ruin of the Castle where the AngloScottish wars started, with the Kings of Scotland being forced to recognise the Kings of England as their lords.
Alnwick and Warkworth
Castle’s don’t get much better than Alnwick and Warkworth! Both Castles had belonged to the Percy family – vast landowners and defenders of the English border against the Scots! Today Alnwick is best known for its inclusion in film and TV shows, from Harry Potter to Dungeons and DragonsHonour Among Thieves, and Downtown Abbey.
Newcastle Castle and Newcastle-upon-Tyne
The Castle that gave the city its name! This day tour gives you a tour of a surviving medieval keep, while also taking you around the modern city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, known for its industrial heritage of shipbuilding and coal mining, the city started with its castle and today is known for its vibrant food and drink scene.
Raby Castle
Beginning as land granted to the Great Viking King Cnute, Raby developed into the home of the Nevilles, famous for their power and ambition, from appointing kings to rising against their power in religious revolts. While the Nevilles are now extinct the Vanes, Lord and Lady Barnard, still own the castle and have transformed its grounds and historic buildings into a deer park, walled garden and restaurant that combine history and modern style.
