Historic Fortresses of North East England

North East England boasts the highest number of castles in the region, a testament to the tumultuous three hundred years of conflicts between England and Scotland. This rich history has profoundly shaped the region’s strong, passionate identity. (When booking, you can select the days you are most interested in to tailor the tour to your preferences. If you have any queries, just get in touch.)

Bamburgh and Lindisfarne

Bamburgh Castle has been a human settlement for over three thousand years. Famous for its role during the Dark Ages and as a medieval fortress for the Kings of England, it recently gained further fame through its depiction in the series “Last Kingdom.” Nearby, Holy Island is renowned as the starting point of the Viking Age, marked by its ancient monastery. (Those especially interested in the religious history of the region may want to consider joining us on our Multi-Day Faith Tour in North East England.)

Berwick-upon-Tweed and Norham

Berwick-upon-Tweed, positioned on the English-Scottish border, has a tumultuous history as the most contested town in England, changing hands fourteen times. Norham Castle is a significant ruin where the Anglo-Scottish wars began, playing a pivotal role in the historical conflicts between the two nations.

Alnwick and Warkworth

Alnwick and Warkworth Castles are jewels of English heritage, long associated with the Percy family, who were significant landowners and defenders of the English border. Alnwick Castle is particularly well-known for its roles in various films and TV shows, including “Harry Potter,” “Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves,” and “Downton Abbey.”

Newcastle Castle and Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Explore the origins of Newcastle-upon-Tyne with a visit to the medieval keep that gave the city its name. This tour combines historical insights with a look at the city’s vibrant modern life, known for its industrial heritage in shipbuilding and coal mining and a lively food and drink scene.

Raby Castle

Originally granted to the Viking King Cnute, Raby Castle became the stronghold of the influential Neville family, known for their political maneuvers and participation in religious uprisings. Although the Nevilles are extinct, the Vanes, Lord and Lady Barnard, now own the castle. They have transformed its extensive grounds into a combination of historical and modern attractions, including a deer park, walled garden, and restaurant.
