Faith Across History in the North East of England

The history of the North East of England spans several millennia and provides a fascinating insight into how faith was practiced and evolved from prehistoric times to the modern era.

This region is home to ancient rock art, standing stones, and a profound Christian heritage marked by miracles, saints, and churches. (Please select the days you are most interested in to tailor the tour to your preferences — if you have any questions, please get in touch.)

Prehistoric Era (11,000 BC – 43 BC)

Explore the region’s ancient sites, including standing stones, Bronze Age burial sites, and Iron Age hillforts. Learn about the spiritual lives of the early inhabitants of the British Isles and their belief in the forces of the unseen.

Roman Religion (AD 43- AD 410)

For 346 years, the Roman Empire brought its pantheon of gods and diverse religious practices to the British Isles. This tour will take you through the remnants of Roman temples and forts, exploring the complex tapestry of faith during this era. (For Roman history lovers, we also have a Multi-Day Hadrian’s Wall Tour.)

Anglo-Saxon Beliefs (AD 410 – AD 1066)

After the fall of Rome, Northern and Central European migrants brought their pagan beliefs to the British Isles, which evolved into Christianity within a century. Discover the profound impact of this religious transformation in the Northeast of England and its broader influence on Europe.

Medieval Era (AD 1066 – AD 1485)

Visit Escomb, one of the oldest churches in the British Isles, built around 670-685 AD. From there, journey to Durham to explore its UNESCO-listed cathedral. This tour highlights the architectural and spiritual significance of these medieval landmarks.

Early Modern to Modern Era (AD 1485 – Today)

Trace the evolution of religious authority from the Bishops of Durham, who originally resided across from Durham Cathedral but later moved to Bishop Auckland. The tour includes a visit to the impressive castle and the Faith Museum, which covers the history of faith in the British Isles.
