Faith across history

The North East of England has a rich heritage of faith and evidence of how it was practised across
the ages. From the prehistoric rock art and standing stones to the rich Christian heritage of miracles, saints and churches

When booking please select which days you are most interested in to create the tour you would most enjoy

Prehistoric – (11,000 BC – 43 BC)
On this tour, we will take you around the region’s ancient sites, from standing stones and Bronze Age burial sites to the hillforts of the Iron Age British. Discover how the peoples of the British Isles experienced their world and expressed their belief in the unseen.

Roman Religion– (AD 43- AD 410)
The Roman Empire ruled for 346 years in the British Isles. During that time numerous Gods, cults and faiths existed, both in unison and in opposition with each other. On this tour, we will take you on a journey through Roman faith and religion, including the ruins of Roman temples and the forts they existed next to.

Anglo-Saxon Beliefs (AD 410 – AD 1066)
Following the fall of the Roman Empire, a migration of peoples from Northern and Central Europe came, with
their own beliefs to the British Isles. Within a hundred years, they had become Christian. Discover this journey in the North East of England and how this impacted Europe and the world.

Medieval – (AD 1066 – AD 1485)
On this day we explore one of the oldest Churches in the British Isles, Escomb, likely built between 670 AD and 685 AD. From this fantastic little church, we head to the city of Durham with its UNESCO world-famous cathedral, exploring both this amazing city and its breathtaking Cathedral.

Early modern/ Modern ( AD 1485 – Today)
The Bishops of Durham had lived in the palace opposite the cathedral, but over time moved to Bishop Auckland. The impressive castle still exists today and incorporates both the history of various bishops and their achievements (and faults), but also the faith museum covering the history of faith in the British Isles.
